We have a number of these around 'Nooga area.  I know there were a few in Hsv area.  I like them, with a couple of issues:

- I have seen dullards who dont know what to do - I saw one just 2 days ago which sat at the circle entrance (blocking me) and waited for there to be no traffic approaching the circle (not IN the circle) from either direction until she felt comfy to enter the circle.  I was just about to lay into the horn when she finally moved.
- There is one here local which is just too darned small diameter - I cannot get through it with my trailer without running the trailer up on the inner curb, and almost cant with just the truck.

I had not thought about the fuel/idling issue, or the stopped-at-a-light-with-no-cross-traffic issue, both of which are advantages for the traffic circle.

I like them. It seems most people don't know how a 4 way stop works anyway.

I run into those things many years ago when I was working in Boston.  They have some big ones up there with inner and outer loops.

I absolutely hate the damned things! Trying to go through them with large vehicles is terrible. They are not made for big trucks or cranes to go through them. You have to take up both lanes and people try to whip up next to you because they don't realize you aren't going to fit in one lane and can't get moving fast enough to fly through them. It's also very hard for a convoy of work trucks to stay together going through one of them while driving to a job. People suck at judging the speed of a vehicle coming their direction. It only gets worse when they coming at them in a curve. They also seem like a big waste of space as there is large area of nothing in the middle of them.
