Coalmine Cleanup Part II

Saturday, March 26, 2005

Where:  Meet at Fuel City, Hwy 72 East, ½ mile east of McDonalds

When: Sat. March 26, 8 AM

We need help picking up the trash on Coalmine Mountain.

Here’s what we need:

-         Pickup Crew:  +75 people to pick up trash and put it in bags and set by the road to be picked up by the Hauling Crew.  During pickup, segregate trash into aluminum cans vs. glass, plastic and paper.  Large items go by the road for pickup. Pickup crews will be organized into teams to go to specific areas of the mountain (i.e. dump sites, turnarounds, ridge water holes, powerline and camping areas).

-         Hauling Crew:  20-25 ATV’s with trailers to get the trash from the top to the bottom where we can put it in trucks and trailers.

-         Dump Crew: 12-15 full-size pickups with large trailers to get the trash to the dump the following week.  Trucks don’t have to be 4x4 nor go up the mountain.

Ground rules:

-         Each person is responsible for his or her gas, ride etc. to/from and while on the mountain.

-         Each person needs to bring and use appropriate safety gear such as gloves and hiking shoes or boots.

-         Each club or person needs to bring 55 gallon heavy duty 3 mil garbage bags

-         To reduce the cost of dump fees, we will try to “even” out the trash with the beer cans that can be turned in for money.

-         We can now dump our March 26 Coalmine trash in the District 1 county landfill, located in New Market.  Directions:  Basically, we will take Hurricane Road north to New Market, turn right on Winchester Road, take a left on New Market Road (right in the middle of New Market - where the building burned a few years ago) and go to Beth Road.  The landfill is on Beth Road.

-         No trespassing i.e. don’t go behind posted signs, gates etc.  Park only where allowed or permission given from the landowner.

-         No alcohol

Good news.

I spoke with Buddy Gatlin in the District 1 County Commissioners Office (Roger Jones Commissioner, 828-0726).  District 1 has its own landfill, and we will have permission to dump whatever we pickup on the 26'th in this landfill at no charge.  The landfill is very close to coalmine.

Basically, we will take Hurricane Road north to New Market, turn right on Winchester Road, take a left on New Market Road (right in the middle of New Market - where the building burned a few years ago) and go to Beth Road.  The landfill is on Beth Road.

Anyone dumping stuff should tell the operator at the gate that you are with Rocket City Rock Crawlers 4X4 club and use my name, Herndon Elliott, and you will not be charged for dumping.  If there is any problem, go ahead and pay the charge and RCRC will reimburse you, and I will work it out after the fact with the County Commission - KEEP YOUR RECEIPT for the charge.

I will call Mr. Gatlin again on Friday prior to the cleanup and remind him.  I dont expect problems.  Mr. Gatlin is familiar with the area, and was very positive and grateful for what we are trying to do.

Hey yall I would be interested in helping and I could bring at least 3 ATVs and trailers with me. The only problem is that I have heard that there was a problem with where to park. So if any one knows anywhere to park let me know.

I have no idea where the ATV's park.  I know they don't park on the Sharp's Hollow side with all the "No Parking" signs.

But of all the times I've been there, there's been plenty of ATV's on the mountain, so they had to park somewhere.

Try the Bamabogger link above or ask the guys at ShoalsATVRiders.com.  They have a forum, but it apparently is open to club members only.  You can e-mail the officer's though.  Ask them to come out and help when you talk to them.

Thanks,

Al

I'll be there with my truck and trailer.  I dropped off fliers at Allsport and I'm going to Cycles Unlimited tomorrow, both are motorcycle/atv dealers in Decatur.

I believe we will be able to use it to shuttle stuff from the bottom of the mountain to the landfill.  Please plan to bring.
