Hello All,
We are new to all of this and just have a few questions. We made our first meeting in Febuary and are hoping to make our first ride this weekend. About the ride this weekend.... Can we choose what day we ride or do we have to attend both days? Also where do you guys meet up at?? If there is anything else that would help us out such as info.. please feel free to share it.

Check out the "Registered Visitors" forum. As a club visitor, you have access to that area where we let Registered Visitors know where we plan to ride... Am I right in assuming that we have to attend the meetings before we are allowed on a club run? It's fine if so but I'm getting an itch for some trails and all of my wheelin' buddies either blew a head gasket, don't want to damage their rig or they live in Tennessee.

We don't have anything stating that you have to attend a meeting before you come on a ride. If the ride is to some park then sure. If the ride is to our property we'll probably at least want to meet you first or as long as some member can vouch for you. Nothing formal, just want to make sure we're not hauling some hooligan around.

That's totally understandable and respectable actually. I was hoping to catch the February meeting but had so many family birthdays that week that I couldn't make it. Definitely planning to make it to the March one though.
As for my Nissan handling rocks, it does about as well as can be expected from an IFS with open-diffs. It has a factory LSD in the rear but the torque-break is so low it's literally non-existent. Although since getting my new 33's, I really haven't had a chance to test it on much rock. Mostly the muddy and rocky trails up at Coal Creek is all it has seen. It was so dry at Mountainside the last time I went, I ended up folding two tie-rods and blowing an auto-hub. Never thought too much traction was a bad thing. lol

Don't. We're trying to do a shakedown run this weekend if we can get at least one other vehicle to go, but we plan to ride again either the 1st or 2nd weekend in March...maybe both. I am sure we'll talk more about it at the next meeting. Hope to see you there.

I am dying for John (83K10) to get his TJ going, so I can drag him out whenever I want to go. He is working on getting it trail ready. He got it about 3 weeks ago. He refuses to ride with only one vehicle. He's had to walk too many times.

Sounds great! I've got it marked on my calendar to attend and so far my schedule is looking good that week. I should have all of my ducks in a row as far as my rig goes. Still building my supply of trail spares back up after Mountainside depleted it. My Tennessee trips are on hold for a while until my buddy there finishes his SAS on his xterra. |

Thats the exact reason we stopped wheeling our hardbody and got my Cherokee. Too may tie rods and idler arms replaced in fields an a couple tows home. The solid axle on the cherokee is so much nicer. Kyle |

I've got a similar video myself that was shot on Tombstone at Mountainside ORP. Although I didn't keep pushing it after I felt the tie-rod let go.
Yeah the Nissan steering is definitely lacking in just about every way possible. I will agree with that 100%. I've upgraded mine with heavy-duty tie-rods since along with an idler arm brace and a reinforced draglink for that very reason. Although locker is top of the list as far as pricey mods I have planned next but looking into converting the steering over to a Total Chaos heim-joint steering setup. But not sure if I want to dump a grand into the steering when I will be SAS'ing it in a few years.

| My bad... when I typed that I hadn't had my morning coffee yet. I meant spending a grand on a new steering setup if it's only going to be in it a few years before I replace it along with the IFS when I SAS it. The heim-joint steering made by Total Chaos costs around $1000. Everybody I've talked to and seen with an SAS on an xterra has a different setup. Calmini makes an SAS kit that runs around $2K not including the front axle but most guys do a fully custom setup replacing both axles with D44's and D60's because of the lack of availability of lockers and gearing for the H233B axle. It's a left-hand diff and the gearing varies. I can't remember exactly but I think my buddy went to a 5.38 or somewhere in that range. He's running full-width D44 in the front and a full-width D60 in the rear. |
