This shows the detection locations in Google Earth.  There are fires reported in the area where our house is in Nooga, about 4 miles away, LoS....but this is not shown on the FS fire data maps.  The fire is in the area of Boston Branch Lake.  Our place is about 4-5 miles south.  weatherunderground.com  http://https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=35.12&lon=-85.34&radar=1" rel="nofollow - wundermap shows this and other fires that the FS site doesnt, maybe they are too small.

We went thru Nooga this past week on the way to Windrock. Heavy smoke started south of town all the way past Soddy Daisy. At times you couldn't see the mountains when going thru town because of the smoke. Had a Blackhawk fly over the highway carrying one of those water buckets.
Windrock had it's share of fires also.

Were the fires up in the bigger trees or just burning the smaller scrub, ground leaves, etc?

At Windrock it looked to be just burning the small stuff. There was no wind so it was manageable. They had a dozer cutting firebreaks.
