You didnt state what year or type of vehicle etc....so I am assuming its an older non-solid state ignition or hybrid with a coil and distributor. Most of these have setup which has power supplied through a ballast resistor circuit when the ignition key is in start position, then it drops back to 12V for the run position. So it sounds to me like you have the ballast resistor side connected, but not the run side to the coil, or through the ignition switch. Hope this helps.... |

Turn ignition ON without attempting to start. Measure voltage between each side of coil and ground. One side should be 12V, other should be zero. If no 12V to one side of coil, it aint gonna run.

i had the coil tested lastnight and it was good...if i turn the key and start it..it will run...but if i let go of the key if shuts off... i can hold the key on for as long as i want and it will run....starter is ingauged tho..ive tryed to hook up the 2 wires to the starter selinoid different ways ....only the one way will it even crank over...the other ways it dont....ive spent 14 hours tryin to figure this damn thing out...i close my eyes and i see wires...thats how bad it is....ahaha do you think if the MSD box is bad or the coil is bad... it would do that...only run or get spark when i hold the key? or you think i have wires crossed over wrong somewhere? thanks Chris |

Glad you got it worked out. I can't tell you how many times I've had to replace that dang thing. It's gotten to the point where if I have any kind of starting problem, I look there first. At least they are cheap and very easy to get to!
