...often misattributed to Lincoln:
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatreds. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man's initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

According to Wikipedia, its actually a statement by William J. H. Boetcker known as "The Ten Cannots" (1916), this has often been misattributed to Lincoln since 1942 when a leaflet containing quotes by both men was published.   But regardless of who said it, these seem to be highly appropriate for our current situation.  Our leadership obviously has never heard these "cannots"......

One particular quote from Braveheart the movie comes to mind....
Stephen:  [to William Wallace] "God tells me he can get me out of this mess, but he's pretty sure, you're f*****."

I think that purdy much sums it up.

Pardon his Irish.

That guy had a number of good quotes that could apply to our little mess:

"Fine speech. Now what do we do?"

And then there's this great one:

(Sarcastically): "Just when we thought all hope was lost, our noble saviors have arrived."

"Fine speech. Now what do we do?"
Short of removing those that have found their #1 priority is to take care of themselves, nothing!! You may say you have the power of your vote, well thats true but this game we call elections is set up for those being elected not for those voting. Once they are in office they are pretty much insulated from the voter and they are set for life in most cases and for the most part answer to no one. We have allowed them/they to obtain so much power that unless we the forcefully remove them from their positions it simply won't change. The politician doesn't care about anything but the election. They lie and tell us what we want to hear to be elected and then they do what they want after they are in. End of rant.

True time and time again. Pretty much gotta hope for the best though. Too few options. It's too early to even mention impeachment. He is still too popular. Guess we gotta hope for change to get better.

The time is near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be free men or slaves. George Washington

A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor and bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.
Thomas Jefferson

Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories.
Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
Thomas Jefferson

At the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin
was asked, ``What have you wrought?'' He answered,
``...a Republic, if you can keep it.''
