How hard is it to swap an IFS system for a solid axle?  How much money is required for the axle to swap in?

I am interested, but not sure how much it would cost me for front axle and gears (5.11's)

Marlin Crawler's kit:  http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/suspension/sas.htm  About $1000 +/- plus installation.  Not an endorsement, just one of many available from MC, Trail Gear, All Pro etc.  SAS doesn't have to be done at once.  Doc wheeled his for quite a while before he SAS'd it a couple years ago.

Gears are about $185 each plus figure $150-$200 for installation for both.

Hope this helps.

on IFS where are the gears?  Would I need to re-gear the IFS setup and then regear a solid axle later if I chose to run the IFS for a while?

They're in the flux-capacitor just below your canooter valve.

Rats, looks like the IFS front 3rd won't work with a solid axle.  Couple hundred bucks less what you can ebay for it after a SAS.

Don't obsess over SAS, it doesn't have to be done immediately.  Engine, body, 5 speed (it is) - those all good?  Those are things to concentrate on.  My .02.

Here's another place that offers the kit.  They also sell the individual pieced, if you want to piece together your own stuff.

http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/suspension2.htm

Like Al said, not an endorsement, as I have never done business with them, myself.

Read the "Front Axles" section in the link that Jake provided.  Different size 3rd member.  Rears are all the same from early '80's to mid '90's but not the fronts.

All Toyota IFS (up till very recent) are 7.5" ring gear while the rears (until very recent) and the front solid axles are interchangeable (with certain odd exceptions) and are 8" ring gears.  So if you build an IFS of this vintage for the trail, any investment you make in the IFS will be throwaway when you do the solid axle swap.  Of course you can sell those parts though.....

I wheeled the heck outa my old IFS setup.  This toy would serve you well for a while as a trail rig!

Thanks for this information!!

What are the largest tires I can run stock until I can do the SAS conversion?  I don't want to spend any money lifting the IFS system just to have to replace it all for the SAS and I know I am going to do that.

I wouldn't mind doing some trimming to the body if I need to in order to fit some larger meats for a short while.

I ran 33 x 12.50's on stock 15 x 7 wheels, with no lift.  Wheeled it quite a bit that way.  I think the narrow wheels were a key to that working.  Wider or more offset wheels and I think they would have hit a lot of stuff.  I'll see if I can dig up a pic.

You can run 32's with a little trimming, a little hammering, and and wheels with high backspace (4", etc.).  Keep the tires narrow and tucked in, and you can fit 'em even bigger.

In my shop we are working on a 93 model truck right now running 35" SSR's with just a 3" body lift.
