Any radio that transmits should have a SWR* matched antenna.  The handhelds are matched prior to assembly.  If you buy the correct antenna that's MEANT for the GMRS freqs, you most likely will be able to use it without tuning without frying the radio.  A 1:1 match SWR (ideal) is pretty hard to achieve anyway.

Also, recognize that just because you can modify the radio to work on a particular frequency, doesnt mean its going to work well or last very long.  This is especially true for the handhelds - they generally have an antenna thats designed and optimized for the freq range that the radio is sold for, and if you mod the radio, its not going to match (high SWR) and can literally fry the innards of the unit.

50 watts of FM is a lot of ooomph.  I have seen a 50 watt radio do freaky things like light up idiot lights in the dash.  Most modern car owner manuals will tell you that they are designed for some maximum RF transmitted power to be installed. Yeah I know, dont try this at home, professional driver on a closed course etc etc.  You want some metallic surface area between your antenna and things like your engine computer.

I had a ham radio buddy there in Hsv with a high-wattage HF rig in his class A motorhome, and he keyed it up on I-65 the first time and his slide-out extended.....at speed.  Messy situation.

The slide out on our truck camper are controlled by a handheld RF controller.  It also controls all 4 Jack's.  I could see something like that happening.
