My father had an '80 LUV 4x4 that had sat unsold 'new' at the dealership for several years, so I take exception to the author's 'the dealers can't keep them in stock' assertion. That 1.8 four banger was definitely weaker than a 22R, and I remember dragging the undercarriage on mud roads in cut-overs while hunting in MS. My father actually traded a '77 Bronco (that's a first gen, for those other than Rodgers) for it, which I also took exception to, but that's another story.

Yeah...we musta had similar Fathers. I bought my 4Runner in early 86, and a few months later, in summer of 86, my Father called me and asked if I wanted to buy his '76 Bronco....the one I had tried unsuccessfully to convince him to sell to me a few months before. Having just purchased the 4Runner, of course, I couldn't.

I was in college when my father traded it off, so I couldn't afford a Hot Wheels Bronco at the time. In fairness to my father, it had P or Q Buckshot Mudders (I don't know how tall they were, but in 1982 they seemed YUGE!) with stock gears and brakes. It didn't even have a brake booster, so you could not ignore a brake light within 1/4 mile. The engine (302) had blow by from running the stock gears, the brakes made it scary to drive, and the with the Buckshot tires you could not sneak up on a cemetery. He wanted an unobtrusive and quiet 4x4 for slipping around turkey hunting, and his friend had a teenager in HS who wanted the Bronco, so there you go. If my father could have set up differential gears he probably would have kept it, but that's about the only mechanical thing he never tried to do.

77 Bronco would be the last year for the first gen. Never owned a Luv but had friends that had them. They were decent as long as you didn't get off the pavement, weren't in a hurry and didn't keep it too long.
