Apparently, you can now get a 5-year pistol permit in Madison County.

Does a pistol license have to be renewed?
Yes. The Alabama State Code states that pistol licenses are valid for between one year and five years from date of issuance.
  1. The applicant may now select the number of years he/she wants the permit to be valid.

  2. Options are for one (1)year or multiple years up to five (5) years.

It really bothers me that they just multiply the annual cost by 5.  I am saving the Sherriff's office some $$ by buying several years, so they should give me a break on the cost.

Thats what I was wondering.

I don't mind paying 5 X $10 = $50 for the paper permit.

But, 5 X $20 = $100 is kinda steep for the plastic version.

If you manage to loose/tear up the 5 year one they will only replace it once in 5 years. If you do the once a year they will replace it one time in a year.

Yeah, the cost benfit wasn't there for me to go for a multiple year license. They at least should only charge once for the plastic card.

I got my 5-year permit last fall.  Paper permit, and just laminated it myself.

Me thinks I will do the same this year.  The system they have now is MUCH better than the old system where you had to go downtown to the courthouse each year and renew in person.

Stay on top of the renewal. I screwed up before renewing last year and had a lengthy gap of like 6-8 weeks from expiration. I had to go through the whole waiting period which took another 6 weeks or so. My previous permits were in Morgan county which was literally immediate renewal. I didn't know Madison county operated in a whole different way.

The only issue I've had with Madison County is that no matter when you mail the renewal check in, they will not issue the new permit until the week before the old one expires.
