G'day all!
My name is Dean and from Australia, we have a large Jeep following in oztralia and I should be visiting your part of the world between the dates of 13th April to 20th April for a training course for work with Honeywell in Huntsville.
I was hoping you guys may be running a trail day or rock crawling day etc on either the 14th / 15th / 16th April and if I could thumb a lift and come along with you guys for the day to experience wheel'in! American style and see some local sights as well.
I was going to write a report for a magazine we have in Australia called Jeep Action, website:- www.jeepaction.com.au which was started by a friend Michael Bowen.
I am a member of the sunshinecoastjeepclub. www.sunshinecoastjeepclub.com
and you can keep upto date with one of our annual events which will be run over easter called Camp Coff's of which I will also doing a report.
Would be awesome to meet you guys / gals, so for now bye! but hopefully catch up with you soon. I will confirm my dates within the next couple of weeks. Cheers Dean

Welcome!

I'd be glad to put together a trip on the 14th if you don't mind wheeling with a few toyota guys. I'm sure we can talk some Jeeps into going as well though. You would be welcome to ride with me if you like.

Let's plan on me picking you up at 0815.  At which Super 8 Motel in Huntsville are you staying?  I think there's one on the Parkway and one on University Drive, and maybe more.

My name's Randy, and I'll be driving a beeyootiful '84 (mostly) white Toyota pickup.  Looking forward to meeting you and introducing you to the gang! Thumbs Up  Unfortunately, (or perhaps not) it appears all the Jeepers are broken down (again) so it will be a mostly Toyota bunch...LOL

Im going to have to back out. Had to much fun today up there. They have been marking and cutting new trails all over the park. Didn't make it on any of them, but they look like a good challenge, and they have bypasses around the harder spots. Whole park is dry, lots of traction to be had, should make for a fun day.

We had a good time, wish you could have made it.  We suffered a bit of axle breakage, think Nick busted a birfield and Don broke his rear ring gear; I don't think there were any other casualties.  It was very dry, and we had no rolls or flops...

Yeah, it was the same waterfall where I broke the ring gear on new years. We took the hub off and the outer gear was shattered into pieces so we thought that was all. Randy gave me his spare but it still wouldn't pull the passenger tire. I thought it stripped the splines on the birf.
However, I got it torn apart today and the carrier cross pin was broken into three pieces causing the locker not to work. The outer hub gear on the driver side was broken as well, so I broke both outer hub gears and the cross pin. The trail gear 30 spline birfs still looked fine.

It was good talking with you Deano and thanks for the Jeep Mag.
As it turned out the ring and pinon in the rear axle were toast.  The strange thing was that the dirvers side bearing adjuster nut had backed almost all the way out.  I had to use a hammer and long screwdriver to spin the nut back in some in order to get the diff out.
I really think this damage was done when I broke the rear drive shaft when RCRC was over at Mtn Side Off Road Park.  We were  crawling dry rock at Hale mtn when it let go.  No wheel spin and not working truggy that hard at all!

Its in Nick's hands now. Thanks Nick for trying to rebuild it with short notice so that I may make the Harlan trip.

The old saying pay to play ;-)

Sadly it appears only Jeepers know how to take pictures, and (even more sadly) only one of them had their rig together enough to even begin the ride...Embarrassed

I did think about bringing a camera.  That's all I did, think about it.

As the token Jeep driver on this ride, I feel qualified to say that a good time was had by all, to include those that managed to break parts.

One thing that irritated me was Dean describing his rig.  Two year old JK Unlimited.  They get them with diesel engines down there.  His also came with a factory installed selectable locker in the rear and it's not a Rubicon.  Why the hell does Jeep make things like that for export but refuse to sell them to us in the US?  Don't bother answering, I know why.  Just a bit pissed about it.

Dean did misrepresent himself to us as being an Aussie.  He's from Birmingham, UK living in Australia with his New Zealander wife (that wants to move to Florida), and working in Africa.  As a nice state trooper once asked me, "Just where do you live son?”  All because of my Texas driver's license, Illinois car tag, and Montana address on my insurance as I drove through Wisconsin at a hgh rate of speed.

Hi mdmtj, I'm sorry if yo think I misrepresented myself to you. It was a real eye opener to me to extreme rock crawling. I did take many pictures and videos of the day and will endevour to put on the forum. I will also post out a few copies of the Jeep Action magazine which will include a report and photo's of the trip. Again a massive thanks to Don and all for an awesome day, Randy, Brendon big thanks for collecting me and allowing me to ride shotgun. Big thanks to Nick for organising an awesome trip, catch you soon. Deano.

It was a bit of an inside joke.  At our last meeting the question of where you are from came up.  After a bit of discussion I volunteered that it was pretty obvious that the Aussie is from Australia.  However, it turned out that the obvious wasn't quite so obvious.

I'm glad you had a good time.  We enjoyed playing host.  If you make it back this way again I'm sure we could make it happen again.

Take care.

Michael

Got these pictures from Michael Murphy last night to upload to this thread.  I think they came from Randy Munn who got them directly from Dean.  We're published!  Good deal.  Dean, glad you could do this and thanks for the good writeup.

Hey Dean,

Good to hear from you.  Enjoyed the ride and liked the write up.  Let us know if you're coming to the Rocket City again and we'll try and set up another ride.  Hopefully next time more of your Jeep brethren will show up... Clap

Wait a minute!  Seems like I was there.  It was a bit light on Jeeps that day.
