Seems harder to find a long term career. Got told as of the 20th I'm going to be laid off. Not sure if I should wait to get hired back or if I should find another job.   I need something more than unemployment has to offer.

Been thinking about a part time job at a parts store like Advanced or Auto zone until I can find something better or get hired back. I never have been laid off or fired from a job and Hope I never do again.

I've worked mostly in construction and worked for awhile in a retail store. I'd like to get into a skilled trade. I have always wanted to work around cars but lack the experience.

Either way I'd like to get some opinions from you. Everyone I'd heard so far seem to have a good head on their shoulders. Anyone heard of any good openings anywhere?

Bummer man!
Real sorry to hear that.

I don't know of anything off the bat but will keep my ears open.
What area are you looking to work - where are you living now?  Madison, Huntsville?

For starters, where were you working?

I work for Champion building patio/sun rooms.
http://www.championwindow.com/patio/default.aspx

I live in Toney/Harvest area now. Madison or Huntsville preferred. I'm not too picky but would rather not drive to Decatur everyday.

Its my opinion that Advance Auto in Madison on 72 could use some help.  Whether they think so is another thing.  You may ask 'em.  You never know.  It would get you something until you find something else.

They had a help wanted sign up a few days ago when I was in there.  I checked about my daughter working there, and they wanted someone 21 or over.

Yep, about three buildings East of Hughes road on the South side of 72.  (Just East of Arby's and Starbucks).  Across from Wendy's.

I see lots of people on here who
- have skills to sell
- have need of someone to build something, fix something, construct something

Should we consider creating a "local job jar" forum?  Like Case posting that he needs a general contractor, or I need someone who does gutters, and JRHall does appliance repair and installs.  Would this be a worthwhile experiment?  Think it would get used?  What should we call it?  "Help Wanted"?  Is there something like this somewhere else already?

I am not trying to thread hi-jack by any means and I know I will get blasted for it,  BUT, IMHO  Advanced as a whole SUCKS! Their customer service, employee knowledge and their warranty standards leave alot to be desired.  I spent years working in the auto parts industry for companies like CHEIF, PEP BOYS & WESTERN AUTO in both the retail and the corporate sides and I think the ONLY  auto parts store that is worth their salt as fair as price, quality of product and customeer service is O'Reillys.  I have never had a bad experience with them and even if some other chain store had a lower price, they have always matched it.  I like the fact that  they carry name brand quality items, too.  I would rather pay a few dollars more for  MOOG front end parts than some house brand that I have never heard of.......but, I digress so  LET THE BLASTING COMMENCE!

I found several temporary stuff today looking but nothing long term. Heard Fastenall is hiring so I'm gonna try to check with them tomorrow.

Bolts while not sexy or entertaining I have found to be very useful Wink. Grade 8 are my friends. Still just hopeful at this point.

I used to work for Fastenal in Decatur which is one of the largest (dollars in sales wise) in the entire south east.  I learned a lot about fasteners that's for sure.  You get a pretty good discount there too (1.15 over cost vs many times over cost).  Most of the folks that I knew have moved on so I can't put in any words but if you get in and learn the system you'll do fine.  Try to get into outside sales, that's where the money's at.

Was looking at the one in madison. might be the only one around here besides the one in decatur. then again I'm not sure.

I'm wanting something for awhile to get set back up. Need something steady I can depend on. The current job was supposed to be long term and I get laid off 7 months later. Kinda worried about getting on something then it not being what I need. I've lived here for about 4 years and had 4 jobs since I've been here.  They have all lead to a better job but it still makes me feel like a bum and doesnt much help my credit.
