im not sure if i want a Super 35 kit for the rear end of my jeep or just swap out the axle...

so i want to take a look around some junkyards looking for either a D44 or maybe a Ford 9" perferably with disc brakes but its not a big deal.  but are there any down sides to gettin an axle outta a junkyard?

anyone know of a good one?  the one out towards coalmine look promising for jeeps since they had like 10 out there that were visible from the road

I'm gonna swap my 35 out for a Ford 8.8.

You can find them aplenty at almost any salvage yard in rangers and Exploders.

I know the Exploder 8.8' come set up qwith 4.10's so thats a big plus. Also comes w/disc brakes already set up and its almost identical in width to the 35.

I wouldnt waste a dime on the 35 if I were you. You can get an 8.8 for 100 bucks or less from a salvage yard. Its a hella-strong axle too.

Heres an article:

http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/ford88.html#how

His prices stated are a load of crap. Most U-pullits (like the one in Birmingham I go to) sell rear axles for 95 bucks plus tax complete from hub to hub.

Personally Just get a spare set of axles and learn how to swap them. The D35 really isn't as bad as some make it out to be, and spare axle shafts are cheap and easy to swap. I've snapped ONE axle under my jeep (4 banger on 32's, 4.88s, and locked). That was on lower 2 at Tellico and just ask anyone here, I'm not that easy on her. I figure if I only snap one axle in 8 years (OK I haven't been out much in the last 2 years, so make it 6 years) I can buy alot of spare shafts for what an axle swap or super35 would cost.

If you want to cruise junkyards, my top choice is A72 salvage out 72 east near Moontown, I've had decent luck there (but never looked for jeep specific stuff, have seen cherokees there and a couple of CJs including an old cj6). There is one out hobbs island road near Owens Cross Roads that had a decent set of wagoneers a few years back. Old Salem has a Jeep specific yard (they just moved off 64 and are back off the side road now I think) but they can be difficult to deal with. Tommy Roller in Southern has a salvage yard and may be able to help.

Complete Auto on Brownsboro Road  (the road beside madison county high school off of HWY 72 East of Huntsville)  has tons of jeep parts.  They are the only people that I can find WJ parts from, but they have alot of wranglers there too.  They might have a 44 or a 60.   Call Jason: 776-2951.

Complete auto is proud of their axles.

The place on the way to coalmine I have looked at many a times but can't ever seem to catch them open.  They have a ton of cherokee's and grand cherokees, and a few regular jeeps but they will all have compriable axles to what you already have.

I was junkyardin' the other day and the place on north parkway a few miles south of the TN line has a few Explorers and he is pretty decent on the price (@$100).  If you are gonna swap out I agree with jdubz, go with the 8.8, close to the same width, same bolt pattern, rear discs, and stronger, should be a pretty easy swap with few loose ends to tie up.  Just my $0.02

Sure, the rear axle that is in our xj came off a junked vehicle and we haven't had any problems out of it yet.  Just make sure you pull the cover, check bearings, brakes and all that good stuff.

I second the 8.8 option. The ones out of an explorer have 31 spline axles, disc brakes,  and if you find one with a tow package it will have a track-lock.

Anybody here familiar with the Jeep junk yard near Bean Creek in Tenn?  I've passed it a couple of times but it's been over 10 years since the last time I've seen it and don't recall the highway it's on.  It could north of Skyline, dunno.

It was east of the intersection of Winchester Road and Hwy 64, on Hwy 64.....or it used to be.  Just beyond Huntland.  I think it was Mo told me he is kinda hard to deal with.  I havent been by there in a long time, dunno if its still there or not.

That's the Old Salem junkyard, heard from Steve and others it's hard to deal with them, can't walk the yard anymore. They may have changed management as it has now moved back off 64 down the side road some. I went by there once to get an exhaust manifold for the Waggy and they didn't have any and couldn't recommend anyone (found some here in town finally).

Don't worry about the C-clips in that 8.8, you ever seen em? They're extremly thick, you'll break the shafts LONG before you break the clips.

I've done alot of research on this subjet, dollar for dollar, an 8.8 swap makes the most sence.............IF you're wanting to do an axle swap.

Its not the c-clips themselves that break... its the neckdown of material where the c-clip locks in thats the weak part...
