Why do you need a new DS? Can the existing one be repaired or modified to work?

What trans and transfer case do you have? I could probably find a front driveshaft for you. There is a couple of guys in the club with full sized chevys. John |

Just something to think about. A friend at work bought a early 80's chevy 4x4. It had no front d/s either. He rebuilt the motor and installed a front d/s. Only to find out previous owner had changed the rearend out. He had 3.07 gears in the rear and 3.73 in the front. I guess as a precaution the previous owner pulled the shaft to prevent damage. You might want to check your gearing. JC

There may or may not be a tag on the back of the transfer case. If there isnt I can look at it and tell you what it is. You might want to check out http://www.coloradok5.com John |

your best bet for the driveshaft is to make your own, or have someone you know build it...the shafts that John makes aren't any bigger than .120 wall....i used to break shafts all the time untill i started making my own...as for balancing them, i've never had a problem...i just put a level on the yoke and tach it, then have someone turn it for me while i weld...i've had my scrambler at near 70mph with 38.5 boggers and a James-made driveshaft with little-no vibrations... those short chevy's are bad about driveshaft issues...even if you get a drive shaft the right length, they like to vibrate... -James |

I've heard a little sand will help with the vibration, don't know if it's true or not. I put some in my front square driveshaft, I know for a fact that it is not square and "round" and I've had no problems - *but* - the Toy FDS doesn't rotate with the front unlocked or the TC in 2 HI, have no idea what a Chebby FDS does in the same condition. IF someone broke the FDS, what else is getting ready to break - would be my question. |

TH350 is the auto. Does your truck have factory locking hubs? JC

The TH400 and TH350 are the automatics for those years. If its has lockout hubs chances are its a np205 transfer case. John |

Being a stepside it's a half ton so that means it's 350/th350/NP205. Unless someone swapped something. The transfer case ID is easy. if it looks like aluminum it'll be a NP203. You said it looked like some bolts were sheered off? which ones? the ones on the flange of the transfer case. Need some info or help let me know.
