Appeal Filed in Florida to Stop 1000 Miles of Route Closures

United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA) and the Florida Four Wheel
Drive Association (FL4WDA) have filed appeals opposing the closure of
more then 1000 mile of routes in the Ocala National forest in Florida.
The closures were made as part of an access designation project when
several areas in the Ocala National Forest were closed to cross-country
travel.

Sixty of the sixty-one concentrated use areas were also closed through
this project decision. The FL4WDA has been instrumental in participating
in the access designation work group over the past 5 years. Consensus
was reached on several issues by the work group, including closure of
some routes.

However, the group failed to reach consensus on the status of
concentrated use areas. Failure to evaluate the appropriateness of
having more than one of the sixty-one concentrated use areas open,
coupled with a failure to analyze the environmental effects of
concentrating use on half the amount of routes, was one of several
National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) violations cited in the appeal.
