Need a little help. actually the truck is my dads and he lives in ft. payne. he got a shop to put in a new heater core and now it makes little to no heat in the cab. (irony)
they have put in 2 new thermostats and it takes about 20 mins of idling to reach operational temp (on the gauge) still barely makes any heat inside the cab.
1.do you think he could have bought two bad thermostats?
2.do you a way to test the heater core to see if coolant is flowing through?
in my mind I dont think coolant is flowing through the heater core or it would be blowing hot air. gonna try and help him get it resolved this weekend since this shop is shrugging their shoulders at him.

Could be an air pocket in the heater coil

No. Ive had to loosen the top heater coil hose clamp and take a hose pic and open the line up a little and bleed the air out. Also you could drain the coolant and pull a vac on the cooling system (if you have access to one of those tools) and put the coolant back in using that.

I would be looking for the hater control valve - a device that controls the water flow into or out of the heater coil. Its probably vacuum operated, but may be manual from the hot/cold lever on the dash. I'd bet that they forgot to reconnect the vaccum lead, or botched the control valve altogether.
Should be two hoses visible somewhere, one leading from the engine to the firewall and one leading back. Disconnect one and turn the engine over (dont start it, maybe pull the distro cap center wire). should get significant flow either from the hose or the connector. Replace, do same on other line, and should get similar heavy flow. If not, you either have a bad heater coil (plugged) or the heater control valve is stuck. Check for twisted or pinched hose also. |

could not get it burped if there was any air in the lines? drive the truck for 7-8 miles and it finally gets up to operating temp and only blows mildly warm air out vents. held the cooling fan and started it up and it climbed up to operating temp fairly quick and then started to blow hot air.
bought the best thermostat they offer at the parts store for it. gonna change it out, again.
Im wondering if the fan clutch could malfunctioning and pulling too much air all the time? I guess that will be the next order of busines.

Was the heater functioning properly before the heater core was replaced?
Maybe the blend door is stuck or the linkage not hooked up properly.

worked fine before the heater core install.
the selector switch for defrost, floor, vents etc.. is working. meaning that when you switch from floor to defrost the air comes out the selected vent. Edited by grundan - 16 December 2010 at 8:16am |

I should have said to check the blend door that directs air either across the heater core or the evaporator core.
