Couple of interesting OnX article links: I wonder why I did not hear *anything* about this from RCRC or SFWDA? Hmmm...... ".....Adventure Forever Grants. This is an opportunity for nonprofits, land trusts, tribal nations, and other community groups to unlock funding for six project types." Interesting. I've been using OnX Offroad for about a year now. Very good mapping app, and it shows the GIS landowner info for private land. If you decide to buy OnX app, use my name in checkout and you will get the exact same price as everyone else.

I think everything OnX has is loaded onto your device automagically. But trails that other people have posted can be DLed and used in the app - when you click on "discover" it shows you trails that people have uploaded near where you are looking or where you are located. But it can import and export GPX or KML files for waypoints, tracks etc. Here's what the PC version looks like for Windrock, for example: ![]() You can see the trails its showing and the info on one of them. Ive been using it for over a year now, just renewed my subscription. I bought a big Android tablet for this purpose for in the 4Runner, it was only $85 at Newegg. It seems to run the app very well. If I want to DL something and there's cell service, I connect it to my phone hotspot and go get whatever.

I will take a look at OnX when I have some time this winter. I think I can download a free version and try it out. I watched a few youtube videos, but I'm not sure it's exactly what I need.
I need to be able to: 1) record tracks, waypoints, etc 2) manually create tracks and then upload them. 3) i have a lot of gps tracks which I have recorded over the years, but I don't want them to get out on an app like OnX for the world to see. But I would still need to be able to upload them and see them on OnX. I bought a 10" Samsung wifi only tablet a few years back which I use in the jeep. It was very cheap back then, but has very limited memory, only 16 gb. Its basically full and I need to up grade to a 32 gb or 64gb tablet. I need to do that before I try out any new gps software.

I'm thinking that Gaia might work better for me. I'm supposed to get my new tablet next week. |

My dirt bike riding buddy up here has Gaia. I looked at it extensively before ponying up for OnX. You can do any of what you are wanting to do with OnX. And no, your personal maps and tracks and all that dont get shared with the world unless you want them to be shared. I follow Matt's Offroad Recovery and his team uses OnX...so you can see it in use in his videos. So do several of the other recovery companies out there. OnX is sponsoring a lot of 4X4 events and such, and they have that Canadian guy Ian Johnson from the show with the female off-roader Jessi Combs. Ian is in Tn, see https://www.facebook.com/IansBigTireGarage/ OnX also conducts classes online, webinars in how to use their product. If you want to DL the product and test drive it, you can use my login to do so. I bought a 12" Android tablet through Newegg for less than $100 delivered (the price has now crept a bit higher, imagine that) which does incredible job with the map displays etc. HTH.... I dont own any stock in OnX........If you use my name when you purchase the software, you will get the same price as anyone else.

I ended up getting the Gaia software. It seemed closer to what I've been using. That OnX software seems to be getting very popular.
I'll try gaia for a year ($60/year); may try OnX next year.

I used Gaia for a long time, started before Outside bought them. Really liked it but stopped using it enough to want to keep paying for it. All the YouTube guys are using OnX and pushing it hard, so they must be getting a little kickback or something. They’re probably all the same and sell your data anyway haha

The OnX looked better and cheaper than Gaia, but I had used the free version of Gaia in the past and was more familiar with it. At least I will get away from Garmin Mapquest which I don't think has been updated in 15 years and also Backcountry Navigator which is old also and nobody seems to use it any more. Ill probably switch to OnX next year.
The other gps software I use is GPS visualizer: https://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ |
