So as not to hijack the other tag discussion....

We moved to Tennessee and retagged our 5 cars/trucks and 2 motorcycles and 2 trailers.  The combined cost for the various tags and associated insurance in Tn was about 1/5th of what those exact same vehicles cost to tag and insure in Alabama.  Yes, 1/5th.  And now, on our first annual renewal, the tag renewal costs $5 except for the Ford F250.

Tennessee doesn't require a tag on private utility trailers.  The chap at the DMV told me that if the trailer  never leaves Tn, forget tagging it.  However, other states require a tag, so if you're going outside the state, you should get a Tn tag to avoid confrontation with other state's LEOs.  I was able to buy a *permanent* tag for the big enclosed trailer for $100.

Property taxes are higher in Tn, but there is no income tax.

Tag fees must vary from county to county then. Because in Lincoln county a tag is around $100 a year, doesnt matter if its a 2 day old vehicle or 70 years. When you have a bunch of vehicles (11) like me that adds up. Where madison county was cheaper for old vehicles around 30 bucks but much higher on new ones. All my trailers have permanent tags which is nice. Property taxes on a farm are low so I like that as well.
