I find that article sad more than anything. Every year more freedom is taken away.

I had just bought my first Europian dirtbike and rode my first enduro in 1973.  The ISDT coming to the US for the first time was a big deal for American offroad enthusiasts.  They rode all over Massachussetts on public and private roads; on public and private land.  I guess its still legal up there to drive off a bridge drunk with your dead secretary in the trunk and then run/swim from the scene, but you better not get caught riding a minibike on your own property because then, you've just gone too far.  Shocked

All gone. I raced endures, isde qualifiers, motox, hare scrambles in the 70s and 80s.  I owned a 350 bultaco alpina, a 360 bultaco frontiera, a 360 husqvarna, a 500 maico and finally a 530 husqvarna.  Bought all of them new.  Should have kept them all.

The Bultacos are really worth some $$$ now.

I have never ridden a big bore 2stroke like the ones you had.  I rode a Yamaha 400 2 stroke one time around 76 or 77 at Prentice Cooper.  Even then, I had the wisdom to return it to its owner after a short ride....it was just too intoxicating.

You haven't had any real fun until you have ridden a big bore 2-stroke motorcycle out in the desert!

I paid $1,100 cash money for that first bultaco in Rome, Ga.  There was a dealer over there who sold bultaco, maico, husky and montesa.

Some of those motors were just too strong/pipey for riding in the tight woods.  I would pull the head and put 2 or 3 headgaskets between the head and cylinder to reduce the compression some to make them a little milder.  They were still very powerful, but the power came on a little more gradualy than just all at once.  I liked the open class motors for climbing hills and getting through bottlenecks during enduros.

I had the enduro version of this maico 490.  But mine was a year or two older than this and was the last year with two rear shocks.  Thats the bike I broke my foot on riding over Blevins Gap up behind old Grissom HS.  That maico was the best handling bike I owned and that 490 was a strong motor.
