Yep, BTDT.  Some careful disassembly, cleaning with brake cleaner and/or degreaser, relube and reassemble is in order.  Seal it up well.  Mine appeared not to be sealed very well.

I wonder how much of that is just old waxed up grease? What brand of winch is it?

It's dirt mixed with the oem grease.

Got everything cleaned out, regreased and reassembled.  Works more better now....even free spools. Smile

If you ever take one apart, take LOTS of photos as you disassemble it.  It makes putting it back together a lot easier.  Tongue
 
Also, order gaskets early before disassembly.  I waited until I needed them and would of had to wait a week to get them.  Had to buy some gasket material and make my own.  PITA.  Cry
