I am putting a new muffler on my CJ5. The tail pipe is currently routed straight out the back and shoots the exhaust right back on me when driving. When I drive my jeep to work I just about have to change clothes because I reek of exhaust. Anyone know if a side exit behind the rear tire would fix this?

I dealt with the same problem in my Scrambler and had Robert at Clanton Muffler re-route it out to the side behind the rear tire. I can't say that it totally eliminated it but DRASTICALLY reduced it.
Robert is a real good guy and does great work for a very good price. Only one I'd recommend in N. Alabama. |

Thanks for the replies. I have been to Clanton Muffler before and had good service. I live in south Huntsville and Clanton muffler is a haul, especially in the Jeep. I might have to make a the trip.
Did he route it to the driver side or passenger side behind the rear tires?

Passenger side.
Over the rear axle with a nice, high bend and then out between the frame and the leaf spring. No rub anywhere. ![]() ![]() |

Worth on university....just down from the parkway also does excellent work. They routed my exhaust straight back and over the axle. Like CJ8lver, but to the inside of the spring hanger and straight back. I don't have any issue with getting fumes in the cab. I only had the Y pipe. The muffler, materials, and labor only cost me around $90. They'll put it wherever you want it. I was just thinking it would be a shorter drive.

I ended up going to worth. They put a turbo muffler on and angled the tail pipe out the driver side behind the rear wheel. I asked if they could route it to the passenger side but they said it didn't have room. I think it decreased the exhaust smell and it definitely sounds better. Thanks for the help.
