So its been a couple of months since we had a discussion on GPS, so I thought I would start another one since the product lines have expanded again.

I have been thinking about replacing my old Garmin eTrex and my nuvi 205w.  I really want one gps for off road, on road, and on the water.  I would like one for the track too, but I already know those packages cost a lot (for those that are interested, check out the Traqmate).

I like the thought of the touchscreen mainly because those are the ones that have the largest screen real estate.  The three Garmins that I have been thinking about are the Oregon 450, the GPSMAP 62s, and the Nuvi 500.   These all have the capability to load topo maps and the only one that does not have an altimeter is the Nuvi 500.  I really want that capability.

What would really be nice is to have all the real estate that the new Nuvi 37xx series have with the ruggedness of the Oregon or GPSMAP series.  Its so hard to get exactly what I want now a days.

So what are your thoughts?

Borrow my GPSMap 76 and see if you like it.  You can crank its track rate up to where it will show a trackpoint every few inches of your on-racetrack driving, if that's what youre after.  It does everything except the audio routing, but the screen is kinda small.  It will accept topos which most of the driving oriented ones dont, I believe.  It also has a lot of marine oriented stuff that I dont understand.

I like our 76Cx, but I wish it:
1) stored 100,000 track points instead of 10,000
2) screeen was twice as big
3) stored 100 saved tracks instead of 20

West Marine has the 76Cx's for $199.

I totally agree on the screen.  But arent the other limits set by the media card?  Or are they hard limits of the device?  I have never run into those limits, regardless.  Like on the Co trips, I would DL the tracks each evening to the PC, so I guess I never realized there was a limit.  Interesting....

They are hardwired limits in the software and it doesn't matter how big a memory card you install.  Another limit is will only download the first 500 points of a track stored in your computer.  It truncates all points starting with point 501.  You can kinda get around some of the limits by fooling the software by naming the stored tracks the same name as the active tracks.

That GPS that Case linked to; it has the same 10,000 point track limit, but it does allow you to have up to 100 saved tracks.  But if you had 100 saved tracks; they would have to average only 100 points per track.

The new Garmin hand helds that replace my 76 and the 60 still have the 10,000 point limit, but they do allow 50 saved tracks instead of just 20.

This may be true with whatever software you are using, but I know its not with Fugawi.  I remember you telling me this at some point, and I verified, Fugawi will DL an entire track, seemingly regardless of the number of points.

I use the MapSource Garmin software.  There is even a warning that pops up on the gps screen when I download more than 500 points.  It says sonthing like: "Track Truncated" or something like that.  Can you download more than 10,000 points to the gps with the Fugawi software?

I havent verified any limit or 10,000+, but I know that back when you pointed this issue out to me, I verified that the same limit didnt exist with the Fugawi.  I recently DLed one from Kaylee and her BF driving from Huntsville to Chattanooga, around on some of the fun mountain roads there (like the "W" road) and back, at I think 80 foot interval....so I know it was far more than 500 points (80 foot interval, 500 points = ~7.5 miles).  It DLed fine in Fugawi and drew a nice track on the map.

Fugawi does everything Mapsource does, only a lot better, EXCEPT push maps to the device, and turn-by-turn navigation.  And Fugawi costs, since Mapsource comes with the device.  Together, they complement each other.

Paul,
This is a good place to buy from when you get ready.

There used to be a GPS store over in Decatur where you could go in and look at each model.
Adventure GPS was the name of the place but they've gone out of business.

Furthermore,
I just saw that Gillson has their MCX antennas on sale.
I've got one of these and have been very impressed.  Excellent signal strength compared to the Garmin brand external antenna that I started out with and for much less $$!
