Swan creek is pretty close, and generally not crowded. Let me know when you want to go, and I'll join you! Congrats on the new acquisition!

At one time it opened back up when duck season closed.

Also, don't you have to have an Alabama hunting license or a Wildlife Management License to use the range?

As far as I know its closed during duck season.

And they do require a hunting license or hunter safety course certification before you can shoot there, although I have shot there many times without them.  I have never been asked to provide credentials.  I think if you are shooting safely they will leave you alone.

Swan Creek closes every year during waterfowl season, which I think that ends Jan 31.  You are supposed to have an AL hunting license and maybe the WMA permit.  I've shot there many times and only seen the Game Warden check licenses once.  The warden I saw was a very reasonable chap; I'd bet my favorite deer rifle he would let you pass with a military ID and orders showing you are only here TDY, or for short term training.  Skyline WMA also has a range, I've never been there.

Skyline has a nice range as well. Either one requires a hunting license or a wild life heritage license. You can buy the later one online for $12 iirc. The money from them goes to maintaining and improving the ranges. I've actually had State Troopers come up to check me before. We were the only ones there at the time and not doing anything we shouldn't have been.

I forgot about duck season. But, after the the season ends you should be o.k. with your i.d.card and your orders. I have never see a game warden on the range.

FYI, from outdooralabama.com site:

Section I – D . 1
MILITARY
Military personnel must meet one of the following In order to qualify for Resident License:
• Must have orders showing they are stationed in Alabama.
• Must show copy of Military file showing Alabama as State of residence.
• Present Alabama driver’s license.
Spouse and dependents living with them, must meet one of the following In order to qualify for Resident License:
• Must have orders showing they are stationed in Alabama.
• Present Alabama driver’s license or show proof of residency for 90 days prior to making application.
Note: Military personnel assigned to another state (GA, FL, etc.) but living in
Alabama, may apply for resident privileges after 90 days using the same
evidence of residency as a nondriver. (excludes spouse and dependents
with out of state driver’s license)
Alabama residents home on leave from Military are exempt from state license requirement. (hunting & fishing ONLY, still required to have WMA, duck stamps, etc.)
Military Personnel meeting these requirements are eligible to purchase Lifetime License.
In event US Congress declares War, license will not be required during that time.
A forgotten asset - Sharon Johnson Park in Madison County has a shooting range.  See http://www.mcssa-al.org/  also, in Marshall county, see http://www.bgrpc.org/  All of this comes from the list at http://www.outdooralabama.com/hunting/shooting-ranges.cfm

Huh?  Say what, Cletus?  You're in Alabama, if you have money, they will sell you ammo if you're over 18.

I think if you are from out of state; you can still buy long guns and ammo, just can't buy handguns.

If anybody knows any outdoor places to shoot until February, please share. I've missed my alone time with Charlene.

Active duty military members are usually considered/treated as a resident for firearm sales in the state they are stationed, but if the servicemember is only on temporary duty that probably does not hold true.

Note: This can work against you. For instance: if you are assigned to Virginia, you can not buy a firearm in Maryland as a VA "resident".  Maryland is probably not the only state with specific goofy liberal gun control laws.  Thankfully, AL is not one of them; at least to my knowledge.
