Looks great, except for the price.

Posted it up before link. I got a used galaxy s5 active to use offline to try it out in its app form (same functionality as the device). The app is free right now as their database is lacking and they want the community to populate it. It only has forestry service maps and a few really popular off road trails at the moment. I mapped our ride at stoney lonesome with it but not sure it uploaded. It's not really intuitive to use. It's easy to forget to "stop" the tracking to record the trail. I thought I had stopped it but I had actually just paused it, so it registered the end of the run at my house. Might be useful once the database is built up, but that lack of data is also what will keep it from getting populated. They also need to work on the UI. You can look at the app at the meeting tonight if you want, I keep the phone in the jeep. I've thought about mapping the individual trails, but that takes time away from riding when you have to screw with the device at the beginning, end, and at any "features" you want to note. An improvement would be to let me edit them so I could just run it the whole time, then go back and break it down into the individual trails.

gps essentials for the Android works pretty well.  It produces GPX files which can be imported into nearly anything.  I use it on my S5 and it will run the GPS for most of a day of riding if you put it in airplane mode so its not trying to talk to momma all the time.  The software will DL and store off line whatever maps you want and then it doesnt have to try to connect where there is no cell service.

So that app records your route then dumps it to a gpx file? This app may do that too. Pretty sure it imports.

Correct.  Here's one I tracked of an all-day ride at CMRA:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1gFGDCsupgkyM8PWFFV7FA4bxcfA&usp=sharing
I turned on the app in my S5, turned on the GPS, set the phone in airplane mode, and rode for about 6 hours all over CMRA with the phone bouncing around in my backpack.  It (the phone) actually died at the very end, simply ran out of battery.  Its surprising how much juice the GPS uses.  But that was part of what I wanted to learn.  So next time, I'll have it hooked up to one of those little power bricks or else directly powered off the dirt bike's electrical system (I have added a little USB charger on the bike).  When I got home, I used GPS Essentials to export the track to a GPX file, which I uploaded to my Gdrive.  Then I used  http://gpx2kml.com/ to convert it to a KML (google insists on using this proprietary XML format and wont directly ingest a GPX file, as far as I know).  Then open the KML file in google earth, save it as "my maps", set the sharing, and its what you see in the link above.

As CJ8Lvr has discovered and is making a nice name for himself, these smartphones are pretty darn good GPS devices.  You really dont need a gazigabuck GPS unit anymore unless you need some sub-10-foot accuracy or something like that.  You already have the hardware in your pocket and probably carry it with you on every ride.

The only reason I have that android around is because of the limited app support for my windows phone (which I love, and will not switch from). But it has PDFmaps which is pretty simple and works well, so if I could capture the trail once and export then I could carry just one device. I like the idea of the TRX7 crowd sourced database but not sure how much that will get populated (and is reliable).

They now have a BETA version for the Windows phone if you want to try it out.

Windows phone?  Good heavens, man, do you have whale oil lamps and drive a Saab?  Windows phone is not going to be around much longer, Im afraid.  There is a reason that there is limited app support.

I have been pretty happy with my Samsung GS5, except for the crapware and nagware that Verizon shoves onto it.  My warranty is out, and Im probably going to root it soon, when I run out of things to do like Toyota motor swaps, to get rid of all the junk apps.

I meant I was using PDFmaps on my Windows phone, and it works well.
