By Dewie Whetsell, Alaskan Fisherman.
As posted in comments on Greta's article referencing the MOVEON ad about Sarah Palin.

The last 45 of my 66 years I've spent in a commercial fishing town in Alaska. I understand Alaska politics but never understood national politics well until this last year. Here's the breaking point: Neither side of the Palin controversy gets it. It's not about persona, style, rhetoric, it's about doing things. Even Palin supporters never mention the things that I'm about to mention here.

1. Democrats forget when Palin was the Darling of the Democrats, because as soon as Palin took the Governor's office away from a fellow Republican and tough SOB, Frank Murkowski, she tore into the Republican's "Corrupt Bastards Club" (CBC) and sent them packing. Many of them are now residing in State housing and wearing orange jump suits The Democrats reacted by skipping around the yard, throwing confetti and singing, "la la la la" (well, you know how they are). Name another governor in this country that has ever done anything similar.

2. Now with the CBC gone, there were fewer Alaskan politicians to protect the huge, giant oil companies here. So she constructed and enacted a new system of splitting the oil profits called "ACES." Exxon (the biggest corporation in the world) protested and Sarah told them, "don't let the door hit you in the stern on your way out." They stayed, and Alaska residents went from being merely wealthy to being filthy rich. Of course, the other huge international oil companies meekly fell in line. Again, give me the name of any other governor in the country that has done anything similar.

3. The other thing she did when she walked into the governor's office is she got the list of State requests for federal funding for projects, known as "pork." She went through the list, took 85% of the m and placed them in the "when-hell-freezes-over" stack. She let locals know that if we need something built, we'll pay for it ourselves. Maybe she figured she could use the money she got from selling the previous governor's jet because it was extravagant.
Maybe she could use the money she saved by dismissing the governor's cook (remarking that she could cook for her own family), giving back the State vehicle issued to her, maintaining that she already had a car, and dismissing her State provided security force (never mentioning - I imagine - that she's packing heat herself). I'm still waiting to hear the names of those other governors.

4. Now, even with her much-ridiculed "gosh and golly" mannerism, she also managed to put together a totally new approach to getting a natural gas pipeline built which will be the biggest private construction project in the history of North America. No one else could do it although they tried. If that doesn't impress you, then you're trying too hard to be unimpressed while watching her do things like this while baking up a batch of brownies with her other hand.

5. For 30 years, Exxon held a lease to do exploratory drilling at a place called Point Thompson. They made excuses the entire time why they couldn't start drilling. In truth they were holding it like an investment. No governor for 30 years could make them get started. Then, she told them she was revoking their lease and kicking them out. They protested and threatened court action. She shrugged and reminded them that she knew the way to the court house. Alaska won again.

6. President Obama wants the nation to be on 25% renewable resources for electricity by 2025. Sarah went to the legislature and submitted her plan for Alaska to be at 50% renewable by 2025. We are already at 25%. I can give you more specifics about things done, as opposed to style and persona. Everybody wants to be cool, sound cool, look cool. But that's just a cover-up. I'm still waiting to hear from liberals the names of other governors who can match what mine has done in two and a half years. I won't be holding my breath.

By the way, she was content to return to AK after the national election and go to work, but the haters wouldn't let her. Now these adolescent screechers are obviously not scuba divers. And no one ever told them what happens when you continually jab and pester a barracuda. Without warning, it will spin around and tear your face off. Shoulda known better.

So "You go, Girl." I only wish the men in Washington had your guts, determination, honesty, and morals.
I rest my case. Only FOOLS listen to the biased media.

There has NEVER been anyone in the White House at any time who has created such an army of staffers whose sole duties are the facilitation of the First Lady's social life. One wonders why she needs so much help, at taxpayer expense, when even Hillary, only had three; Jackie Kennedy one ; Laura Bush one ; and prior to Mamie Eisenhower social help came from the President's own pocket.

I dont like Michelle Obama or much of anyone currently "leading" this country because they are leading us in what I believe is a very wrong direction.  I also know that Snopes is a largely biased liberal site.  But Snopes *does* cite references which indicate that at least there are some serious questions about the veracity of the assertion that previous First Ladies had significantly smaller staffs.  See http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/firstlady.asp

Here's a counterpoint to the Whetsell writeup: http://factcheck.org/2009/12/sarah-palins-accomplishments/

Dont get me wrong, I think a lot of Palin.  I would love to see a Presidential bid by Condoleeza and Sarah and I would vote for them in a heartbeat.  But the Whetsell writeup, as is often the case in hyperbole and extreme rhetoric lately, there is some fact and some fiction and some wishful thinking in what he says.  The article I cite has some counterpoint for your consideration.

I think it would be a very bad thing for sarah palin to run for any position in the white house.  After the historic election of 2008, voter turnout in 2012 will be fractions of what it was for the democrats.  A combination of apathy and a bad economy will make organizing the democratic vote very difficult.

Meanwhile on the right, there is a tremendous amount of momentum and anticipation for the upcoming election.  As it stands right now, the right has the best chance of winning a presidential bid, mostly because there is no clear candidate for the media to begin picking apart.

However, as soon as Palin announces her run at the white house either as prez or vice prez, the volume of the liberal media will be cranked to 11 and the left will be re-energized .  Hardcore libs and moderate democrats and healthy percentage of independents will show up in droves to vote against her.

Make no mistake, she will kill any chance of us having a republican president in 2012.

It's a sad commentary on the state of political exchange in our great nation, but I fear Case is correct.  Stating the name "Sarah Palin" in a crowd of libs is like stating the name "Billary Klinton" at a gun show.

That is quite a list of accomplishments on Palin's part.  I never knew or heard of any of that.  Obviously because the media witch hunt on her was more focused on her being able to see Russia from her backyard rather than actual political accomplishments and goals.  And if she does run in 2012, it will be the same witch hunt all over again.

As for the Michelle Obama entourage, that is sickening.  I would like to see a tally on how much time she has spent outside of our nation's borders versus being here.  She's done nothing more than be an educated housewife in my eyes.

With Condoleeza as Pres and Palin as vice?  I think that it would galvanize 52% of American population, that of the XX chromosomes.  And the racial overtones of having Condi in there couldnt be ignored.

The problem is, there aint any emerging R candidates that are worth a flip.

So has anyone watched any of the TLC's show Sarah Palin's Alaska? I have watched a number of them and find them entertaining. On the one hand I enjoy seeing the wonders of Alaska - Logging, trout fishing, caribou hunting , rock climbing, hiking, etc. On the other, I fear that there is some manipulative motive behind the way a lot of the show is portrayed. She is always shown in such a positive way.

I tend to like her. She seems to think and go about life the way I would and that appeals to me. She likes to work big machinery, be outside, shoot guns, cut up dead animals, climb rocks, and overall just enjoy life. I don't see the same ulterior motives that the liberals think exist. She just thinks this country is headed in the wrong direction just like I do. Maybe I am wrong, but she will get my vote again if the future gives her a chance.

The libs attack Palin because they are terrified of her.  They see another Ronald Reagan coming, but this time in high heels and carrying an elk rifle.

I see it a little bit differently.

You know how we like to use hyperbole to describe the left as they like to describe us?  Well, we would be terrified of a candidate who ran for vice president that openly proclaimed to be communist, outright described socialism as the way of the future, and frequently quoted Marx and Lenin.

I say this with all seriousness, if that kind of candidate ran, we'd be beyond terrified and extremely motivated to vote against that candidate.  Even those of us who occasionally vote democrat or call ourselves independent of party affiliation would rally against a candidate like that.  It would kill any chance of a democrat winning the election.

Well, Sarah Palin is the walking, talking, living, breathing personification of the hyperbole the left uses to describe the right.  And that terrifies and motivates hardcore democrats and independents like no other candidate could.

I totally agree, and I also think that that is exactly the kind of person needed to get this country headed in the right direction.

I'm saying sarah palin was the big reason mccain didnt work out.  The other big reason is because Bush (also) had a very vulnerable public persona, very easy for the media and the left to exploit.  They did a fantastic job of transferring Bush's befuddled, slow persona onto the republican party as a whole, especially mccain.

I'd like to see a candidate with most of sarah palin's viewpoints, but with a more reserved public persona.

I disagree.  Most conservatives felt voting for McCain would have taken us exactly where our current administration is taking us, just on a slower path.  The best chance for the McCain/Palin ticket would have been to change it to a Palin/McCain ticket.

McCain is no Republican.  He just calls himself one and that's why he lost.

I completely agree.  Palin energized the left - they were (as someone else pointed out) TERRIFIED of a smart, eloquent, proven, shrewd and attractive FEMALE.  I think that the lefties are very very afraid of anyone who is practical, earthy, realistic.  Especially so when its not a white guy.  I think that this is the same reason that they hate Thomas Sowell so much, he's credentialed, conservative, and black.  That doesnt fit their mold.

Besides the obvious assumption that Republicans only care about Cain now because they're running against a black incumbent? Let's be honest here. Herman Cain has been politically active (as an author/radio host) for quite a few years, now. It took Obama being elected to get people on the right to consider Cain as a candidate. Hell, Alan Keyes has been trying to get the nomination since the 90's, but he wasn't quite what they were looking for (I guess a doctorate from Harvard and the support of Reagan aren't good enough). If the Republican Party nominates a black candidate right now, it will be seen by just about everybody in the world as a weak, race-baiting attempt to "match" Obama. It would be stupid and virtually suicidal. I'd vote for Herman Cain, I love him. But people that haven't been reading/listening to him for the past few years won't see him for who he is and what he can do. They'll just see him as a black puppet.

Thanks for those. I knew there was something fishy here. There's nothing worse than people lying to try to prove a point you can prove with the truth. It's like when somebody on your team cheats to win the game. Makes the whole team look bad.
