While I agree these folks are idiots and should be caught and punished, there is definitely more to the story than is presented. Death Valley was a National Monument for many years, not a National Park. When it was designated a National Park, they increased the size of the park by over 30% making it the largest National Park in the 48 states (Big Bend at 880,000 acres had previously been the largest). Much of the land that was included had been BLM land that had been open to offroad, shooting, open camping etc. Locals were really pissed when this happened as most of it was closed off. I think there is an anger issue that is boiling below the surface that could have fueled this idiocy.

Maybe, but redneckery does nothing to help. It just makes things worse.

Agree, but still not surprised at it happening. Kinda like back home when a rich dude bought land on Reelfoot lake that folks had been hunting on for generations. He built a duck blind and it was burnt down that year. Build a sheet metal one with a concrete base, and it was dynamited. He eventually sold the land.
What happened isn't right, but I'm not surprised that folks would act out like this given the amount of disdain the Feds have shown to the locals. Very much like the whole "Shovel Brigade" and "Sagebrush Rebellion" out west as the Feds try to run roughshod over locals. Robert |
