That looks like a Winchester 1887, or copy of same. Browning designed it at the request of Winchester, but he told Winchester a pump action would be better for a shotgun. After the 1887 proved as clunky as Browning predicted, (watch the video) Winchester then had him design the 1897 pump shotgun, which was a very serviceable shotgun. The US used it and its decendent the Model 12 in WWI; the Germans wanted them banned because they were so effecive in trench warfare. Given watermelons don't move as fast as Germans, the lack of speed of the lever action is of no concern...

It sure ain't got the smooth action of a model '73.
That John Browning was an amazing inventive mechanical genius. |

Indeed. It is amazing to think firearms adapted ~100 years ago are still serving. Ma Deuce is still going strong at nearly 100, and the 1911 is already past 100. I can't think of anything else from WWI that is still currently being used by soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen.

I believe the Browning High Power is still in use by several European militaries. Mr. Browning was indeed a genius! I think he established more firearm related patents than anyone in history.
